THE VIDEONALE

The Videonale is one of the oldest festivals for experimental video and time-based art worldwide and has been taking place in Bonn for almost 40 years. We see ourselves as a platform for artists, whom we want to bring into an intensive exchange with each other, with our audience and with an expert audience; for a diverse audience, whom we want to acquaint with the various forms of expression and themes of video art; for an expert audience, who would like to discover new artistic positions at the Videonale and participate in the discussion of future questions together with them and us.

EXHIBITION

Since 2005, the Videonale - Festival for Video and Time-based Art Forms has been held at the Kunstmuseum Bonn on an exhibition space of over 800sqm. The works selected as part of the competition are presented as individual presentations in the space. After an open CALL FOR ENTRIES, an international jury will review all submitted works and decide on participation. All selected works will be presented in a six-week exhibition and in an accompanying exhibition catalog.

Together with an exhibition designer, an independent exhibition architecture is developed for each edition, which responds to the works, their themes and technical features and at the same time invites the visitor into a specially created spatial atmosphere for the duration of the visit to the exhibition. In the interplay between scenography and curatorial location in space, a dense parcours of audiovisual artistic works emerges, all of which stand on their own and yet in dialogue with each other.

Since VIDEONALE.15, the exhibition design for the rooms at Kunstmuseum Bonn has been developed by Ruth Lorenz maaskant Berlin. Information on the exhibition design of past Videonale is available here: exhibition architecture

VIDEONALE AWARD
BY FLUENTUM

We are pleased to have Fluentum from Berlin as a long-standing partner who, like us, is enthusiastic about contemporary art in the field of video and film and supports artists through exhibitions, co-productions as well as purchases for its own collection. At the opening of VIDEONALE.19, the Videonale Award by Fluentum, endowed with 5,000 euros, will be awarded for the fourth time by an independent jury from among all selected works.

At VIDEONALE.18 this was 副本人(Single Copy) by Che-Yu Hsu. Further information on the winners of previous years can be found here: VIDEONALE AWARD

FESTIVAL

The Videonale considers itself as a platform for the discussion and mediation of video and time-based art.

During the opening days as well as the entire duration of the exhibition, we are therefore designing a program - with and for the participating artists as well as with and for a diverse audience - that will focus on a shared dialogue about contemporary audiovisual art, its aesthetics, socially relevant topics and content. The opening of the exhibition will be accompanied by the festival days with panel discussions, lectures, artist talks, performances, guided tours, screenings and retrospectives as well as get-togethers and workshops. The Videonale welcomes an international professional audience of artists and filmmakers, festival organizers, curators, gallery owners and collectors.

HYBRID

As festival organizers, we are driven by the question of how we can broaden our perspectives with and through art and enter into a dialogue with artists and audiences about current social issues.

Early on before the opening, we will therefore contact all participating artists and invite them to create formats together with us to engage with their artistic positions. As with the VIDEONALE.18, digital formats will also be used, such as desktop selfies and interviews.
